An outdoor display’s brightness and IP rating are the 2 things that set it apart from an indoor display.
A screen’s brightness, or luminance, is measured by number of nits. Nits is more scientifically referred to as Candelas (candlepower) per meter squared (cd/m2), but display manufacturers generally list nits in their spec sheets. The higher the nit spec, the brighter the display.
Outdoor flat panel displays go up to 5,000 nits. Outdoor LED displays should have a dimmer, which reduces the screen’s brightness at night to levels that are more comfortable to the naked eye. Outside screens must have at least 2,000 nits but we recommend that the LED display should be able to go up to 5,000 nits if it will be in direct sunlight.
